Steven R. López is a professor of psychology, psychiatry, and Chicana/o Studies at UCLA. His main area of research addresses how sociocultural factors relate to the psychopathology, assessment, and intervention of Latinos and other ethnic minority groups. In one line of research, his research team has developed a model of cultural competence for clinical practice, which, with support from the National Institute of Mental Health, they are currently testing. In a second line of research, Professor López studies the relationship of family factors and the course of schizophrenia, particularly among Mexican American families. In collaboration with Dr. Carmen Lara in Puebla, Mexico, Dr. López has also developed a public education campaign to help Spanish speaking family members recognize the key signs of serious mental illness so that they will be able to seek services promptly. From 1995-99 he and Dr. Nelly Salgado de Snyder directed a National Institutes of Health-Fogarty sponsored summer research training program for U.S. minority students and faculty in Mexico City at the “Instituto Mexicano de Psiquiatria” and the “Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico.” He was one of the five science editors for the Surgeon General’s Report on Mental Health: Culture, Race and Ethnicity. He is a member of the FPR Board of Advisors.
