Thomas J. Scheff, PhD

Thomas J. Scheff is Professor Emeritus of Sociology, University of California, Santa Barbara. He is the author of Being Mentally Ill, Microsociology, Emotions and Violence (with Suzanne Retzinger), Bloody Revenge, Emotions, the Social Bond, and Human Reality, and other books and articles. He is a former Chair of the section on the Sociology of Emotions, American Sociological Association, and former President of the Pacific Sociological Association. His fields of research are social psychology, emotions, and collective conflict. His most recent book is Goffman Unbound: Toward a New Paradigm in Social Science (Boulder: Paradigm Publishers 2006). He is trying to become a generalist, which is hard enough, and also a standup comedian, which may be impossible.


The 2007 Conference
