Mark Barad, MD, PhD is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences in the Semel Institute of Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA and an Attending Psychiatrist in West Los Angeles Veterans Health Administration. Dr. Barad investigates the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying the extinction of conditioned fear in mice. Extinction of fear is a form of learning which suppresses the memory of fear, and has long been used as a model for effective psychotherapies for human anxiety disorders. Dr. Barad’s current research and writing explores the development of adjunctive medications that speed extinction in rodents and therefore may also accelerate anxiety disorder treatment. Dr. Barad also collaborates on clinical trials to test the applicability of his findings in human treatment. In addition to his research and academic teaching, Dr. Barad runs a treatment program for veterans with PTSD returning from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and supervises psychiatry residents in the UCLA/VA Anxiety Disorders Program. He also has a small private practice.
